Sims' Next Top Model (abbreviated SNTM and Top Model) is a virtual reality YouTube series created in The Sims 3 based on Tyra Banks' America's Next Top Model, which sees a number of aspiring models compete against each other in a variety of competitions to win the title of "Sims' Next Top Model" and a chance to begin their career in the modelling industry. The series premiered in July 2011, and has aired eighteen seasons since.
The series has spawned a number of spin-off and sibling series. In 2014, the main series went on hiatus as the Mini Version series aired three seasons. After this, in 2015, the Revamped spin-off aired one season before the main series returned in late 2016. Also since 2014, Sims' Next Top Male Model, created by past judge Maicle Gambardella, has aired as an online exclusive series alongside the main series.
On 1 August, 2021, an All Stars spin-off featuring contestants from recent seasons was announced, which premiered later the same month.
Format[edit | edit source]
Each season has 5–12 episodes and starts with 8–16 contestants. The contestants are judged weekly on their performance in challenges, photo shoots and live walks, and at the end of each episode one contestant is eliminated, though in some cases a double elimination or non-elimination is given by consensus of the judging panel. Makeovers are administered to contestants early in the season (usually after the first or second elimination), and trips to international destinations are scheduled around the halfway point and in the last thirds of each season. Exceptions to this include the World Tour sub-series, consisting of seasons 9 and 12 (as well as the second season of the Mini spin-off) where the contestants travelled every one or two episodes.
Judges and other cast members[edit | edit source]
The series employs a panel of judges to critique the contestants' performance and progress throughout each season. Throughout its run, the show has employed seventeen different judges. In the first few seasons, the panel was replaced regularly between seasons. The original panel consisted of Tyra Banks (who served as the show's host for the first fourteen seasons), Courtny-Kay Woodford, Emmanuel K. and Jessica A. The three judges were all replaced the following season by Kortland Arrington and Sakura Xen, who stayed for two seasons. In cycle 4, they were replaced by J. Alexander and Maicle Gambardella. The following season they were replaced by Evan Farron, who only stayed for that one season. The following season saw the return of Jessica A., as well as the first panel of judges to remain intact for more than two seasons, consisting of Max Farron and cycle 3 winner Erin Phoenix. The following season, Banks left her spot as the host, being replaced by the executive producer, Henric W. The season after that, however, Banks reclaimed her position as the host and head judge. The same season, All-Star Loretta Jerniwsky replaced Phoenix on the judging panel. She returned the following season, however. Farron remained until cycle 12, when he was replaced by Laura van Fark. The following season, Jerniwsky left the judging panel, and the season after Phoenix left as well, leaving only Banks and van Fark. Cycle 15 saw an entirely new panel of judges, consisting of Yachana Vazirani as the head judge and host, joined by Sin Il Hong, as well as the return of Maicle Gambardella. Gambardella left in cycle 18 and was replaced by Meher Sabharwal. Though not a judge, Diane Wings served as a mentor for the contestants on the seventeenth season. In season 18, a different alumna appeared as a guest mentor every episode.
