Season chronology

The nineteenth cycle of Sims' Next Top Model premiered on 1 January, 2022. It features fourteen new models. This was the first season to feature models with non-gender-conforming pronouns, those being Bo who uses they/them pronouns and Justine Eckhardt who uses she/they pronouns.

Yachana Vazirani, as a host and main judge, and Sin Il Hong, as a main judge, both returned for their fifth consecutive season. Meher Sabharwal also returned after their debut the previous season. Additionally, they were joined by Lutalica, who previously made an appearance on All Stars and Miguel Atoma, who previously made an appearance in cycle 18, as alternating judges. Maicle Gambardella appears as a recurring photographer in several photo shoots.

Casting

A promo announcing this season and that applications were open was featured in Episode 4 of cycle 18, which premiered on 25 September, 2020. The casting call closed in conjunction with the premiere of All Stars on August 13, 2021. Unlike cycle 17 – which casted exclusively for plus-sized and curvy models – and cycle 18 – which casted exclusivly for BIPOC models – this season does not have a theme and is instead open for any aspiring femininely presenting models to apply. A total of 294 aspiring models applied, out of which 50 made the semi-final round. Out of those, 34 moved on to the second round of the semi-finals and had a K-Pop inspired group shoot to determine the finalists, who were revealed on October 22, 2021.

Twists

• Top Model of the Week: After each episode has been uploaded, a poll is posted accompanying the photo shoot where the viewers rank the photos from best to worst. Each model then receives points based on the viewers' rankings. The results are revealed in the following episode and the model with the most points receives immunity at elimination. With immunity granted, they are automatically safe from the bottom three.
• Yomi and Yomi Revival Duels: Inspired by the Shintō myth of Yomi as the realm of the afterlife, each week, the eliminated contestants go to Yomi where they face off in Yomi Revival Duels. The winner of each duel moves on to the next week, participates in the photo shoot, and then faces off the next eliminated contestant in another duel. The winners of the midway duel and the final duel win entry back into the competition. As part of this twist, Nicole Toledo – who quit the previous season – entered the competition as the opponent to Ola, the first eliminee, in the first duel. She was "revived" and joined the top 10 after winning the fourth duel in episode 5. The final duel took place in episode 9 and the winner, Vera, was "revived" and joined the top 7.

The new models arrive in Tokyo where Yachana tells them a story from Shintō mythology. At the house, Sanaa introduces the others to her church and initiates Bethlehem as a member. Kaiya and Vera clash over their different views on studying. The following day the models receive makeovers, where Ola and Vienna are unhappy with their new looks. At a runway lesson, Kaiya trips due to not having walked in heels before causing her to twist her ankle. Afterwards, the models have a runway challenge where Bo, Justine and Vienna end up on top. For their photo shoot, the models portray various Olympic sports. Archery – Irene, Kaiya, Ngọc Baseball – Vera, Vienna, Zhou Ren Parallel bars – Heidi S., Justine, Sanaa Running – Bo, Darling, Ola Table tennis – Bethlehem, Heidi B. At elimination, Ngọc's portrayal of archery earns her best photo, while Bethlehem, Ola and Zhou Ren land in the bottom three. In the end, Ola is eliminated, but soon after she finds herself at Yomi. At Yomi, Nicole Toledo is revealed as Ola's opponent, and in the end her photo is deemed better than Ola's, and she stays at Yomi for another week. Won Yomi Revival Duel: Nicole Toledo Lost Yomi Revival Duel: Ola Wiśniewska At the house, Vienna is unsuccessful in trying to get to know Irene, while Vera rubs Darling the wrong way. Upset after Ola's elimination, Kaiya tries to make a new friend in Heidi S. with whom she bonds over their upbringings. The following day, the models are introduced to Miguel Atoma and have a bare faced beauty shoot. Zhou Ren struggles before the shoot due to the fear of feeling dysphoric but decides to do the shoot and is deemed the challenge winner. The next day, the models meet Lutalica and film transition TikToks where they have to style looks inspired by different eras. Team '70s – Bo, Vienna, Zhou Ren Team '80s – Bethlehem, Justine, Sanaa Team '90s – Heidi S., Ngọc, Vera Team '00s – Darling, Heidi B., Irene, Kaiya Bo, Vienna and Zhou Ren end up winning. Later, after noticing her valuables are going missing, Vera attempts to confront Ngọc, who lashes out. For the photo shoot, the models have to sell high fashion outfits in a Japanese Konbini. At elimination, Lutalica questions Kaiya's place in the competition, and the judges finally push Irene to speak up. At Yomi, Nicole's photo is deemed better and Irene's and she stays at Yomi for another week. Won Yomi Revival Duel: Nicole Toledo Lost Yomi Revival Duel: Irene Liu Back at the house, Bo talks to Justine about talking over people and how she comes across. Later, Yachana announces that Kaiya has to withdraw from the competition due to a fracture in her ankle. The next day, the models are shot shoot with Sims' Next Top Male Model contestants by Maicle Gambardella, and are introduced to Sigríður, who is brought back from the semi-finals to replace Kaiya. Heidi B., Ngọc and Sigríður's pictures are deemed the best and they go to Hinohara village in Tokyo to shoot a Zalando campaign. Later, the house is split over Sigríður joining, with some of the models finding her entry unfair. The following day, Gözde, Reem and Umwali join the models as mentors in a challenge where they have to take group photos spreading awareness for environmentalism, LGBTQIA+ visibility, and body positivity. Team Gözde (Body positivity) – Darling, Heidi S., Ngọc, Sigríður Team Reem (LGBTQIA+ visibility) – Bo, Heidi B., Sanaa, Zhou Ren Team Umwali (Environmentalism) – Bethlehem, Justine, Vera, Vienna Team Reem wins the challenge. The models then go to a traditional Japanese theatre where they watch a Nōh play before having a photo shoot inspired by said form of theatre. In the end, Sanaa is eliminated and sent to Yomi to face off against Nicole. At Yomi, Nicole's picture edges out Sanaa's, making her the winner of her third consecutive duel. Won Yomi Revival Duel: Nicole Toledo Lost Yomi Revival Duel: Sanaa Cini At the house, Bethlehem invites Vera into the Top Model Suite to look for the jewellery she claims Ngọc had stolen. After finding one of her rings, she confronts Ngọc who denies her allegations, and once Vera refuses to give up, Ngọc pulls a knife on her. Filming is halted and later Yachana visits the house to announce Ngọc has been disqualified for the incident, and reveals that a background check has shown she has a previous criminal record of similar incidents. The models agree to continue the competition. The next day they have castings for Soen Magazine, SPINNS and Shiseido. Bethlehem and Heidi S. impress the most, booking two jobs, while Bo, Justine, Sigríður, Vienna and Zhou Ren all book one each. Heidi B. feels disappointed after not booking any jobs, and asks Bethlehem for advice. Sigríður and Zhou Ren notices something strange in one of the cast photos, and trick Heidi S. into thinking it's a ghost. At the photo shoot, the models meet æ-Il Hong, Il Hong's digital counterpart, and have a metaverse inspired photo shoot in front of a green screen. At judging, Vera throws a tantrum after receiving negative critiques, irritating Bethlehem who calls her out on her attitude. Vienna earns best photo of the week for her intimate photo, while Bethlehem, Heidi S. and Vera land in the bottom. Vera's lack of progress ultimately eliminates her, sending her to Yomi to face off against Nicole. At Yomi, Erin announces the winner of the duel will re-enter the competition. Nicole's picture is deemed the better of the two, resulting in her "revival". Won Yomi Revival Duel: Nicole Toledo Lost Yomi Revival Duel: Vera Chandler The models feel confused about Nicole's re-entry and are doubtful of her journey. At their first challenge, they sell athleticwear in pairs on trampolines, and Heidi S. is worried about injuring herself. Darling and Justine take the best photo and win the challenge. At the house, Bo, Justine and Sigríður bond with Nicole and she opens up about her personal journey since cycle 18. Yachana visits the house and announces they are going to Tibet. Upon arrival, some models complain about feeling sick. At their next challenge, they have to create their own editorials in two teams at three locations in Lhasa. Team 1 – Bethlehem, Bo, Justine, Nicole, Vienna Team 2 – Darling, Heidi B., Heidi S., Sigríður, Zhou Ren Justine and Nicole clash over one another's stubbornness. In the end, Team 1 wins the challenge. Still worried about feeling sick, Heidi B. suggests they might have gotten COVID-19 from their plane ride. The following day, ahead of their photo shoot, Yachana announces they have all tested negative but suggests they might be feeling symptoms of altitude sickness. Then, they are photographed around Lhasa in Tibetan-inspired clothing. During her photo shoot, Vienna collapses and is taken to a hospital. She returns later that evening, saying she passed out due to stress and dehydration. At judging, Zhou Ren earns best photo of the week, but the judges are unable to make any other decisions as their opinions differ too much. The models are asked to vote, but Darling raises an objection and states she would rather sacrifice her own place for the sake of the others than vote somebody out. Ola, Irene, Sanaa, and Vera all return to Yomi for a final chance. In the end, Ola and Sanaa are asked to sit down at the hearth after there is a tie between Irene and Vera. Won Yomi Revival Duel: Irene Liu & Vera Chandler Lost Yomi Revival Duel: Ola Wiśniewska & Sanaa Cini Back at the house, the models are thankful to Darling for still being in the running. Heidi S. is upset at herself for underperforming. At their next challenge, they meet with Kyary Pamyu Pamyu and have a photo shoot inspired by scenes for music videos for her songs "PonPonPon", "Kira Kira Killer", and "Candy Racer". "PonPonPon" – Bo, Heidi B., Nicole "Kira Kira Killer" – Heidi S., Sigríður, Vienna "Candy Racer" – Bethlehem, Justine, Zhou Ren Bethlehem and Bo's photos are the best and they shoot a campaign for Kyary's brand curuput. Bo holds a yoga class for the others but Heidi B. struggles with her lack of flexibility. Vienna feels lonely after Darling's exit and tries to befriend Heidi and Bethlehem but ends up being falsely accused of stealing Heidi's hairbrush. Later, the models shoot digital, moving covers for Vogue Japan. Zhou Ren wins the challenge and gets to chat with her best friend Ya Ning via a video call. She shares the prize with Heidi S. who calls her parents. The models film Mugler inspired video editorials, where Zhou Ren and Nicole have a hard time. At elimination, Bo earns first call-out for their video, while Heidi B., Heidi S., and Nicole land in the bottom. Nicole faces Irene and Vera at Yomi. Irene's video editorial is deemed the worse out of the three and she is asked to sit down at the hearth. Won Yomi Revival Duel: Nicole Toledo & Vera Chandler Lost Yomi Revival Duel: Irene Liu At the house, Justine is disappointed over Nicole's elimination, which Heidi B. takes personally after being in the bottom. Justine states she thinks Heidi should have left over Nicole, frustrating Heidi further. The next day the models go to an ice skating rink for a runway show. Backstage during fittings, Heidi B. and Justine clash again when the designer gives Heidi's outfit to Justine. Meanwhile, Heidi S. feels insecure about her dress and asks if she can change. The designer agrees but not without irritation. Before stepping onto the runway, the models find out they'll be wearing ice skates and that they'll have to walk on ice. In the end Bo and Vienna do the best and win the challenge. Later, Yachana visits the models at their house for one-on-one chats with each of them. The next day, All Stars Ko Umemoto and Nina Wiśniewska visit the models and record an episode of their podcast Fan Faves with each of the models. Bo wins by default bc the challenge went south really quickly lol, and they shoot with Nina for an upcoming Nina Wiśniewska Cosmetics launch. At their shoot, the models travel to a large, Western-style mansion where they have a glamorous murder scene photo shoot in pairs together with Sims' Next Top Male Model contestants. Bethlehem & Heidi S. with Lúðvík Bo & Vienna with Jip Justine & Heidi B. with Hugh Sigríður & Zhou Ren with Prabhu Heidi B. and Justine clash yet again after being paired up. Back at the house, Heidi B. calls Justine arrogant which offends them, and the two go at each other. At elimination, Heidi B. and Justine win first call-out together, while Bethlehem and Sigríður land in the bottom. In the end, however, no one is eliminated. Justine is irritated about having to share first call-out with Heidi B., and over the non-elimination. Bethlehem and Sigríður take offence after being the ones in the bottom. Justine storms off and Bo accuses Bethlehem and Heidi B. of bullying her. Later, Nakazawa Seishiro from lilac@AOYAMA visits the house to give Heidi B. her new makeover. The models then head to their next challenge where they have to put together Zalando lookbooks in two teams of four in a limited amount of time. Team 2, consisting of Bethlehem, Bo, Justine, and Heidi B. struggle working together due to lack of communication and time management. In the end, team 1, consisting of Heidi S., Sigríður, Vienna, and Zhou Ren win the challenge. The models head to their next photo shoot, where they have to embody different yōkai from Japanese mythology. The models head to their next photo shoot where the shoot mock ads for Maybelline New York. On set, they are joined by Elyonmi Razafimandimby who helps mentor them before and during the shoot. At elimination, Zhou Ren wins best photo, while Heidi B. and Justine land in the bottom. The judges find Heidi B.'s portfolio too one-dimensional and she is sent home. Won Yomi Revival Duel: Vera Chandler Lost Yomi Revival Duel: Heidi Becke Yachana announces the new top 7 are travelling to Fiji. Upon their arrival, the contestants are annoyed with Vera's return but Bethlehem states she is not competition due to her previous performance. The models meet Jeff Probst and compete in a Survivor-style reward challenge which Heidi S. wins. As her prize, she wins a night's stay at a spa resort, which she shares with Bo and Zhou Ren. Back at the house, Bethlehem decides to make a truce with Justine. At their photo shoot, they have to model unique haute couture garments on a beach. Later, Vera confronts the others about their unwelcoming attitude towards her, to which Bethlehem claps back, saying nobody there likes her. During the judging ceremony, Yachana asks the models to name who they think should be eliminated, to which all but Vera responds Vera. Backstage, she yet again confronts the other models but is shut down by Bo and Justine before storming off. At elimination Yachana announces a double elimination will take place. The top 5 contestants are visited by cycle 18 runner-up and go-see challenge winner Taynara Brito for a final runway coaching and prepping for go-sees. Heidi is determined to improve her walk and practises the rest of the day. The following day, the models meet Erin and Rose Yu who sends them off to see four designers around Suva. After being dismissed by the first two clients for not suiting their brands, Bo feels discouraged and demotivated. Vienna decides to follow Zhou Ren to all of her go-sees to keep an eye on her, to Ren's annoyance once whe catches on. Eventually, all models make it back on time. Back at the house, Ren and Justine are happy to be donme with the challenge and throws a party. Vienna feels on the outs for not yet opening up much to the others, but Bo and Justine ensure her that they see her as a friend and ask her to rejoin their party. The next day the models go to the Suva Municipal Market for their photo shoot where they have to stand out of a crowd of contestants from past cycles and Sims' Next Top Male Model. Bo still feels shaken after a negative experience with go-sees. At elimination, Yachana tells the models which jobs they booked. Bo, only having booked one job tells the judges about not feeling like they were being taken seriously by the clients, and argues that they felt disrespected and undervalued by both the clients and the show. Yachana ensures them that if they make it to the next week she will arrange for them to see other clients. Heidi, Justine, and Zhou Ren all book three jobs each while Vienna books two. After receiving negative critiques, Vienna feels convinced they are going home, and when Bo states they also feel in danger, Vienna tells them not to worry due to the judges favouring them. Bo says they are tired of feeling othered and seen as different than the others. At elimination, Ren wins best photo a third time. When Yachana calls Bo as safe due to having won Top Model of the Week, they refuse to step forward, and announce they want to leave the competition. Afterwards, Justine and Vienna are left as the bottom two, but in the end neither are eliminated. At the house, Justine is upset about Bo leaving the competition, claiming they should have won. Heidi gets irritated because she feels Justine is discrediting the others. The next day, the models have an "anti-aesthetic" photo shoot with Yachana where they have to work with bad lighting and sets. They then head to their first show at Fiji Fashion Week. At the first show, SunDay, Taynara Brito pep talks Heidi and Ren. Later at the second show, Degei Couture, Vienna talks to the designer to try and get booked, but is rejected again. Back at the house, the models reminisce on the season and their impressions of one another. The next day, Heidi and Ren participate in an impromtu casting for Wainiqolo 3D where Ren is booked. Finally, all four models walk in Apsara Fiji. Later, they have a dramatic photo shoot with Fijian fruit bats. At elimination, Heidi is praised for her strong runway and photos, and wins first call-out. Justine and Ren land in the bottom two, but in the end both are saved and all four contestants advance to the finale.
